It helps. You should be comfortable making basic cuts. If you are brand new to editing, take Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve first and come back for the craft.
The craft applies in any editor. Demonstrations use Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, and Resolve's free version is genuinely capable if you do not want a subscription.
